The shameful return of Carolyn Davis

Dallas City Council member Carolyn Davis wasted little time in demonstrating she is going to continue to be an embarrassment for the city of Dallas for another two years. After being the only incumbent forced into a runoff in the just completed municipal elections, Ms. Davis used her first public moment since she won the runoff to make a complete fool of herself. For a reason known only to Ms. Davis, she used a ceremony recognizing a group of visitors from Senegal to attempt to defend her indefensible trip to Belize, which she tried to pawn off as a trade mission since the trip was paid for by taxpayers. She did not (and probably could not) list any tangible benefits to the city from her trip.

(1) She was INVITED on this trip by Charles O’Neal, VP, Dallas Black Chamber; (2) It was coordinated by the Tri-County Chamber; (3) The purpose of the Belize Trade Mission was to:

- Explore trade opportunities between Belize and Dallas

- Promote educational opportunities in Dallas for Belizean students.

- Connect with local government officials.

Per memorandum from Ron Patterson, Senior Coordinator for the city’s Office of Economic Development, the delegation visited with the local mayor, the Prime Minister, and ministers of Trade, Banking and Insurance. They also saw various business presentations and met with private businessmen.

This was not a “city paid vacation junket” as the you continue to insinuate! It was a legitimate business trip. Councilmember Davis has served this community tirelessly for many years and is addressing the needs of her constituents.

What? I assume you mean the Tri-County Black Chamber of Commerce of Houston, as described in this story. The TCBCC is purportedly trying to develop Harris County, Fort Bend County, Brazoria County, Galveston County and Waller County, so I can't see why Davis would play a role in their little vacation junket.

If Patterson wrote a memo, it might be more persuasive if it wasn't a self-serving justification for him being along for the ride. Who paid for him? The City of Dallas, or was he there as Chairman of the International Committee for the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored by them?

And, all in all, having goals of "exploring, promoting, and connecting" is conveniently fuzzy, isn't it? With absolutely no concrete, positive results for Dallas, I guess she can always claim she sure got to "explore" on her little vacation, thereby meeting the "purpose" of the mission.
