Last night marked the first debate between candidates for governor of Texas. Unfortunately, the only two debaters were Democrat Bill White and Libertarian Kathie Glass. Gov. Hair flatly refused to participate in the debate, sponsored by the League of Women voters.
I had not had much exposure to Glass before this debate but she was shattering. Her response to just about every question asked -- including what do to about mental health issues in the state -- was to cut taxes, reduce spending and secure our borders.
There are some folks out there claiming that Hair is simply afraid to debate White. But I had an a really scary alternative thought. Hair is not really even running for re-election for governor. He's busy working on his plan to win the 2012 GOP nomination for President. Imagine that thought. Hair has created an $18 billion budget shortfall and doubled the state's debt; imagine the horrors he could inflict on the rest of the country.
Maybe I'm an incredible optimist, but I'm thinking even Republicans are not about to stoop so low as to nominate Hair for President. A recent survey of scholars by Siena College ranked Hair's predecessor, who, of course, made to the White House, as one of the five worst Presidents in our nation's history. I don't think Republicans are willing to make that same mistake twice and nominate another Texas governor for the highest elected office in the land.
