Emmit Smith and Jerry Rice were voted into the pro football Hall of Fame today. Duh. That's about as shocking a revelation as the announcement that Peyton Manning and Drew Brees have been named the starting quarterbacks for their respective teams in tomorrow's Super Bowl.
What is shocking is that Don Coryell, Cris Carter and Charles Haley, among others, not only failed to make the Hall of Fame, but these three never made it beyond the first round.
C'mon, voters: What the hell are you smoking? Coryell completely changed the way the game is played with his innovative passing schemes. Carter ranked second in league history with 130 touchdown receptions at the time of his retirement. Haley won five -- count 'em, FIVE -- Super Bowls. Perhaps I can see why the voters didn't like Haley; he never had much use for them when he was a player so I guess the media types are thinking it's payback time now. But the voters are supposed to base their selection solely on their performances on the field of play. These three belong.
