With travel costs going through the roofs, several big time college football programs are thinking about reducing the number of games they play each season, not increasing them with the addition of a playoff. Ohio State reportedly suffered mild sticker shock when it received a bill for $346,000 (that included a $24,000 fuel surcharge) for its charter flights to Los Angeles for its game with USC.
The cost for even short bus trips has increased, as has the cost of feeding teams on the road. When teams fly commericial airliners they are hit with extra baggage fees, not good for an outfit that needs lots of extra equipment.
Rob Edson, the financial director for athletics at Syracuse University, estimated travel costs have increased between 7 and 10 percent in the last year alone.
