In the advertisments for the movie "Atonement," which opens at the Angelika on Friday, there is a prominently placed quote attributed to John Powers of Vogue: "The most enthrallingly stylish tale of love and war since 'The English Patient'."
Now that's diabolically clever. "The English Patient" won the Oscar for best picture in 1996 and its closest competitor for the award was Joel and Ethan Coen's "Fargo." Now here we are 11 years later with "Atonement" the front runner for the best picture Oscar and its closest competitor seems to be Joel and Ethan Coen's "No Country for Old Men."
Nothing like sending a not-to-subtle message.
