Is "American Intelligence" an oxymoron

One has to wonder after this report that says "Sorry, we lied to you again. Iran isn't really working on building a nuclear weapon. In fact, Iranians aren't playing with nukes at all." This on the heels of similar reports about Iraq that led us to the current quagmire we're in -- reports which also turned out to be false.

People really ought to listen carefully to what John Bolton is saying about how intelligence assessments are arrived at, and how this particular assessment has been politicized.

The thing about intel is that usually it is a little like reading the tea leaves. Intelligence gathering is picking up stray pieces of intel from various sources then deciding what it means. How the intelligence sources connect the dots depends a lot on their own political perspective. This is why Bolton is saying the NIE report needs investigative digging because knowing who served on putting out this report and what their political views (and lack of Middle East expertise) have been, Bolton believes this is more about bitch slapping Bush than it is about reading Iran accurately. From what I've been able to read around the web, I think he is probably right the report is politicized to reflect badly on Bush.
