Something to wine about
The Nielsen Co., which, I guess, is in the business to survey just about everything, recently completed one on wine, what kind of wine people are buying and so forth. A couple of results that I found fascinating are (1) the average price for a bottle of wine is $5.66 and (2) wines with screw caps cost twice as much as wines without screw caps. Result (1) becomes more plausible when you realize there really is a lot of cheap wine sold in this country (hence the population demographic known as "winos"), but (2) really baffles me. Oh, and chardonnay is not only the wine of choice in this country, but accounts for 23 percent of all the wine sold in the United States.
